How NSW recertification works
New South Wales is the one state that issues its own Food Safety Supervisor certificate on top of the nationally recognised units — and that certificate is valid for five years from its issue date. To stay compliant, you recertify before (or shortly after) it expires.
There’s an important timing rule. Recertification — the shorter renewal pathway — is available while your certificate is current or has been expired for no more than 90 days. If it has been expired for more than 90 days, you’ll need to complete the full Food Safety Supervisor course again rather than the recertification. Recertify in full with one approved RTO — and we’re one of them
Under the NSW rules, the units for your certificate must be completed in full with a single approved RTO — you can’t split them across different providers. That makes choosing an approved provider that can do the whole thing in one place the simplest path.

Who needs to recertify?
If you’re the appointed Food Safety Supervisor for a NSW food business and your certificate is approaching — or has reached — its five-year mark, you’ll need to recertify to keep the business compliant. NSW food businesses must have a Food Safety Supervisor with a current certificate, and a copy must be kept on the premises.
If a certificate lapses, the business generally has a short window (around 30 days) to recertify that person or appoint another qualified Food Safety Supervisor. Renewing before the expiry date is the easiest way to avoid any gap.

How often do I need to renew my NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate?
In New South Wales, your Food Safety Supervisor certificate is valid for five years from the date of issue. After that, you must recertify to stay compliant.
My NSW certificate is about to expire (or just has) — what are my options?
NSW has two pathways. A shorter recertification course is available if your certificate is due to expire or expired within the last 90 days, but only from providers the Food Authority has approved for it — we are not one of them. If your certificate expired more than 90 days ago, the shorter pathway is closed to everyone and you must complete the full course again. That is what we deliver, and you can also choose the full course at any time if you would rather do it with us. Contact us and we’ll tell you honestly which pathway you need — including if that means going elsewhere.
Is Melbourne Tech Institute approved to issue the NSW certificate?
Yes. Melbourne Tech Institute is an approved provider under the NSW Food Authority’s Food Safety Supervisor program (RTO #45799, NSW approval no. 88522), so we can issue you the official NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate. Do all my units need to be completed with the one RTO?
Yes — NSW requires the units for your certificate to be completed in full with a single approved RTO; you can’t split them across different providers. Because Melbourne Tech Institute is an approved NSW provider, you complete everything with us in one place.
What happens to my business if our Food Safety Supervisor’s certificate lapses?
NSW food businesses must have a Food Safety Supervisor with a current certificate, and a copy must be kept on the premises. When a certificate lapses, the business generally has a short window (around 30 days) to recertify that person or appoint another qualified Food Safety Supervisor — so it’s best to renew before it expires.
How much does it cost in total?
Your all-in NSW price is $159 — that is the Food Safety Supervisor course at $129 (a limited online offer, normally $200) plus the $30 NSW Food Authority certificate. There is nothing else to pay: no postage fee, no exam fee, no admin fee. The NSW Food Authority advises you to ask every provider for their total NSW price including the certificate, because headline prices often leave the $30 out — so compare us on $159, not on $129.
How fast will I get my certificate?
The course is 100% online and self-paced. Your nationally recognised certificate is issued within one business day of completing your assessment. The NSW certificate works differently: it’s issued by the NSW Food Authority, not by us, and we’re required to issue it within 10 working days of you being assessed competent (we’re an approved provider, approval no. 88522). Once it’s through, we email it to you and it’s also available any time from your student portal under My certificates.
